Round 22 - Let's start again

So we are looking for a new coach. 24 hours after the loss to the Bulldogs Knights is sacked. This was surely the response to a season that went pear shaped back in round 11 and built up a momentum that was too strong to resist. So first a PM and now a coach ... what is the country and the team coming too! Well Knights for all his attributes seemed to lack one important ingredient ... panache! He is a rather dour person who seemed unable to conjure up a team plan or a momentum in the players that could build on 2009. 2011 was looking like another year of re-building and you can only do that for 3 or maybe 4 years! So who do we want but more importantly who can we get. I hope the committee has a plan better than the one the government came up with or we too will be in a hung situation. Maybe Liam McCormick would fill the bill!

Round 22 - Hooray!

That's right - hooray! This year is finally over ... it's been a shocker of a year for the Dons. Injuries crippled the Dons, but there was more problems than just injuries. First, there are big question marks about the gameplan and Knights as coach. Second, too many players did not improve this year, too many so-called leaders at the club did too little. Third, the loss of Lloyd and Lucas hurt, and the likes of Neagle and Williams did nothing for the forward line. The big positive was Watson - what a captain! And Gumby stayed fit (for most of the year). And there are a few players on the list with talent. BUT it's now time for a review and a HUGE pre-season. See you in 2011.

Round 21 - Back Knights?

So the Dons lose again, no surprise as they fielded the Bendigo team since the most of the Essendon team is injured ... but the Dons are a rabble (at least out on the field). So what to do? Back Knights? Sack Knights? I tend to think the Dons should put this year out of mind and back Knights 100% for next year. Nothing is more important at footy clubs than confidence and support. Bring on 2011.

Round 21 - Anyone for a beer!

It was certainly not beer and skittles in the first half. The Bombers (Bendigo) were outplayed and thought by the Brisbane with Brown showing why we need a forward! Yes it was a side more akin to the Bendigo Bombers with 15 players under 50 games. By the end of the game there was an intensity with some play that looked more like an AFL side.

So another big game and another big loss. The loss is one thing but the manner of the loss is another. Watson 30 possessions and 2 kicks...is anyone out there!? It is a dispiriting performance from the Bombers even given the Magpie juggernaut that will no doubt fizzle in September!

So we see out the year with Knights saying he will blood some new players. Why bother to provide them with such excruciating losses? Better to leave them in the twos to win games and get some confidence and skill. If he bloods new players expect them to take half a season to recover ...if they ever will from such drubbings. Learn from losses maybe...but learn from demoralising thrashings? I think not coach!

Round 20 - Bad Times!

Before the game I tipped the Pies by 100 points in the Essendon footy tipping competition, and I was spot on. But it's not the fact the Dons are losing more than winning. It's how they are losing. Tonight was a joke. Literally, it was funny just how bad the Dons are under Knights as coach. The responsibility for the state of the team rests on his shoulders and his time must surely be up? The Dons will likely lose to the Lions and Bulldogs, and finish the year on 7 wins and 15 losses. But again it's not about losing a few games, it's about the fact the game plans and structures are not working! There is no passion or fight in the team! Where did the Essendon I know and support go? Where? I want answers, and so do all the other Essendon supporters.

Round 19 - Shocker!

There is something seriously wrong when in a final quarter of football ten goals are kicked to one! Call it how you like.....team building, lack of player games, injuries, fitness and whilst each has a part to play in such a debacle it comes back to the coach! Where are the instructions from the coaches box when a side gets a run on? Where is the leadership in the coaches box with directions on to the ground that gets senior players into positions to stop the rot? The end of the season can not come too soon despite the outside chance of a win here or there! Questions will need to be asked by the Board to get a side on the ground in 2011 which is competitive.

Round 19 - What's wrong at Bomberland?

I mean c'mon what's going on at Bomberland? The Dons were pitiful against the Blues. Good teams don't concede 10 goals in a quarter. Teams that want to be good teams don't concede 10 goals in a quarter. Where are the Bombers? I think they are lost ... and losing any sense of direction. It's going to be one hell of a review at the end of the season because it's been a year to forget.

Round 17 & 18 - Two Wins in a Row!

I leave the country and look what happens in Round 17. I thought that the win against North was an aberration but no it was the first of consecutive wins! To beat the Sainters is no mean feat and now for the Blues. It's a long way to the top but you have to start somewhere. By the way I was attending the opening of the Eco-City 2010 Forum in Guiyang, China. It was a cocktail event so I had important matters to attend!

Round 18 - "New" Dons

I don't understand the Dons at the moment ... but one thing is for sure - Hille and Ryder are our most important players. They change everything for the forward set-up. It means one rucks and other drops deap into the forward line, which means the likes of Neagle and Gumby get some space, and then Monfries can run around in front of them.

Also, Hurley is a better defender than forward. And Fletcher is a master! Plus Stanton off the half-back line was brilliant, and why has Houli not been in the team??? The guy burned up the Saints when the game was on.

But the truth is the Dons are out of the finals race. I think Knights and the team have a long long way to go before they can really be "respected". And it seems Knights knows this too - he said the Dons have to be able to beat teams below them and win interstate. That is the difference between playing finals and not.

Let's see if the "new" Dons can thump the Blues.

The Bombers were never in the game and despite the coach suggesting that the second half was better it was surely off a deplorable base. The second half of the year looks to be one of rebuilding and maybe determining who will be wearing the red and black in 2011. Knight's has a lot of thinking to do...and so do the players. The Bombers are under the microscope!

Round 14 - What a joke!

Yes, the Bombers are a joke! How else do you explain losing to the Crows by 84 points and managing just 5 goals for an entire game. To get an idea of just how bad the Dons are playing this year, just think how much bad press the Crows have received this year, how much they have been ridiculed for their performances ... and then think that the Dons and the Crows have the same number of wins for the year. How will Knights react to this loss? How will the Dons get anything out of the next 8 rounds of footy? Nobody knows.

Round 13 - Hawks Revenge!

We played a good couple or quarters but nothing was going to keep Buddy from inspiring the Hawks to a win. They are a good team and the 5 losing game streak belies their season as they will be in the 8 for sure. The Bombers have worked hard in the first half of the season but the rewards are yet to come. This year? Maybe not...but the future looks good if they grow in experience both mind and body.

Round 13 - No forwards, no finals!

The Dons had a red-hot go against the Hawks, but a guy called Buddy got in the way ... And at the end of the day, the Dons just don't have any key forwards that mark inside the forward 50 and kick goals. Hille and Ryder were starting to provide a target up forward, but then Hille got injured. Hille should be back after the break and he needs to play well straight from the get-go. Gumby and Hurley try hard, but they are very much "development" players. The Dons have 9 games left and they need to win 7 to make the finals. Seems pretty unlikely! But it all needs to start with a BIG away win in Adelaide! Go Bombers!!!

Round 12 - Cats claws too much for the Bombers!

They used to carry handbags but today the Cats are a very different side and looking the goods. The Bombers have had another reality check but then we have had quite few to date. Still the likes of Hurley, Davey, Watson, continue to improve and along with others we still could be a team in the next decade. Not that we are writing off 2010 given the vagaries of wines and losses across the competition. Let's see if we can blunt the Hawks claws next week!

Round 12 - It's a long long way to the top ...

Just when you think the Dons are turning the corner and building into a finals team, they run straight into the Cats ... and get smashed by 71 points ... This pretty much sums up the night for the Bombers. "Playing against Geelong is the ultimate reality check for an aspirational team. Week after week, season after season, they step up to the line to challenge Goliath. Almost every time, they are left to pick over a few morsels of positive play, since the scoreboard and the bottom line are against them. Last night, Essendon had its turn. The Bombers came to the Docklands pumped up, and cobbled the opening goal through Alwyn Davey's soccer skill. But the Bombers left knowing that they are a way off premiership contention - around 12 goals off the pace, to be truthful."

Round 11 - C'mon Bombers, beat the Cats!

The Bombers lost Fletcher and Stanton before the game, then Hille and Monfries in the game ... but they almost beat the Swans ... almost! It's now the Cats again, and the Dons simply need to win! Go Bombers!

Round 11 - Swans slip in!

What a match and given we had one on the bench it was a stirling effort by the Bombers. However losing is not good enough when there are 8 teams vying for the 8th position on the ladder! It's a tough ask if Hille is out for a few weeks though Bellchambers was best on the ground on Sunday ...and he did not even know that Hille had gone down! So to Geelong who we held for three quarters in round one! Can we hold them for four and be in front at the end. Go Bombers!

Round 10 - Not the kicks but the tackles!

The Bombers defeated the Bulldogs with an attacking game that was underpinned by 75 tackles. The best on the ground included those players who had few kicks but a significant number of tackles including Davey, Lovett - Murray, Zaharakis and Ryder. Each of those players had less than 15 possessions. This was where the game was won...and lost for the Bulldogs. Watson, Winderlich, and Jetta also had a significant number of tackles but also had over 25 possessions. The combination was telling and despite the goals to the Bulldogs in the last quarter no commentator was convinced at any time that they could win nor should they have won given the dominance of the Bombers.This augurs well for the next rounds against teams that the Bombers should be able to be both competitive and come out winners!

Round 10 - Magnificent!

What a way to start the weekend! Yes, the Dons led by 38 pts at one stage and only ran out winners by 9 pts but they dominated the game, kicked goals when they needed to kick them, and ultimately held on to win a BIG upset! The Dons are really coming now with so many young players stepping up and up next - the Swans in Sydney. Another test! Go Bombers! Go Knights!

Round 9 - Fletcher, Fletcher, Fletcher

Yes we won and Dustin again showed the longevity of his skills, courage and conviction to the Bombers cause. And yes we are a team to be reckoned with when we play to our ability and with flair. Davey and Jetta were welcome inclusions. Watson is the ultimate ball getter and is hurting oppositions. And Hille has regained his 2008 form. I reckon we can beat the Doggies...minus a Hall!

Round 9 - Solid win!

The Bombers put back to back wins together to build up some nice momentum for a big clash with the Bulldogs next week. Beating the Tigers is nothing to get too excited about, but with 14 different goal scorers and Hille back in form, the Dons are looking good. But they will need to lift to another level to challenge the Bulldogs! And it's a huge month of footy for the Dons - the Bulldogs, the Swans in Sydney, the Cats, and then the Hawks again - whew!

This was a solid win with the Bombers showing the tenacity and commitment of players to each other that wins games. Watson again shows his mettle and Fletcher shows his experience that never ceases to amaze. Winderlich is showing speed and class and Gumbleton keeps on keeping on. Hille is retuning to form and if we can contain injuries and the Bendigo Bombers keep winning and provide a good supply of players and competition we are going to give the 8 a shake.

Round 6 - Back on track?

A week is indeed a long time in football, and it was a very long week for the Dons being heavily discussed in the media, including a stinging attack from Hird about the performance of the Bombers on ANZAC day. The young Bombers responded and turned up to play the Hawks! It was passionate, attacking football with the likes of Gumby and Hurley showing exciting signs for the future. But are the Bombers back on track? Far from it! They sit 2-4 and must claw their way back into contention again with more wins. Next week is Port at the Dome. Must win.

Round 6 - Hawks Knightmare!

A week in politics is an eternity; a week in football is a godsend! The Bombers who played last night were a different team of players who turned up for the clash against the Magpies. This team revealed a game plan that no doubt the coaching staff are looking for; a team of committed, defensive and offensive set of players. But the win will be paper thin if it can not be backed up by a couple of back to back solid wins. Watson was outstanding as was Winderlich and Hurley. Gumbleton continues to impress with his marking and speed across the ground. And we actually opened up the game with run throughs the middle that stretched the Hawks and set up a goal spreading spree involving 11 goal kickers. The Tribunal may well have a say in next weeks team. Go Bombers...a good team effort!

Sack Knights! Yes, that's how many Bombers supporters feel right now! It's of course not the solution (at least yet), but it shows how much of a rabble the Bombers are at the moment. They are playing awful, predictable football and the opposition clubs find it so easy to play them. The Pies smashed the Dons, will the Hawks too? Let's see how Knights and the Dons respond to the HUGE pressure on the club, players and coach ...

Round 5 - Knightmare!

It was a debacle...and the coaches and selection committee have a lot to answer. What happened post the 2009 season was in their hands and they have blown it! Lloyd should never have been allowed to resign. It was based on a overblown reading of Neagle, Gumbleton and Williams. Whilst Gumbleton has shown promise it will take a season or two for him to become a forward of standing. Neagle, despite a pre-season and hype, is well off a game and Williams has been a disappointment. But the coaching has been stolid and predictable. In fact the coaching box during games looks as overwhelmed as the players on the ground. Where's the fight...maybe even some yelling and expressions of frustration. It all looks too predictable to me!

Round 4 - Under the pump

The first month of footy for the Dons in 2010 has been pretty woeful ... apart from beating a rather shocking Blues, the Dons have lost to the Cats, Freo and the Eagles. The Bombers better get their act together fast because the second month of footy is the Pies, Hawks, Port and Saints - oh boy! Knights has reached a big moment in his coaching career - either his game style will starting work or it will leave the Dons at the bottom end of the table. Time will tell.

Round 4 - Back to basics

Once again the Bombers showed a lack of elementary skills and under pressure it shows on the scoreboard. Six goals to zip in the second quarter highlighted the lack of defensive skills up the field and an inability to foot and hand pass the ball with the skill needed to prevent teams running up unassailable leads. The Selection Panel and Coach now now need to decide whether to stick with players or return them to the VFL to hone their foot and hand skills. Hille's return to form was a highlight and Watson continues to be the engine room though Welsh put in a solid performance. A number of players went missing in the second quarter but maybe with their final quarter contribution may hold their spots in th team. My view is Williams, Prisnall and Davey have to be in a Bombers team in 2010 despite their mediocre performances to date.

Round 3 - It's called 'foot'ball!

Sitting high above the ground on the top level of the Ponsford Stand in front of the scoreboard provided a seagull’s view of the game. It was also alongside Kes, Dave and Alex so I had not only a good view but at times scintillating commentary. Alex less so as he is a Blues fan! However the view certainly provided an excellent vantage point for the good plays and the not so good and painful ones. The Bombers have a propensity to hand ball when in fact the game is called ‘foot’ball for some a fairly obvious reason…the aim is to get from one’s defensive end of the ground to the goal scoring end as quickly as possible thus leaving the opposition defenders out of position or at least feeling as if the ball is not directed to them.

Fortunately we were playing a team that seemed unsure which end of the ground they should be concentrating and their game plan as a result was stagnant whilst the Bombers was certainly with intent. Fortunately the 'intent' won the game and the Bombers scored their first win for 2010. If the ‘foot’ does not come back into their game in the not too distant future then I fear that the season will be one or preparation for the 2011 season rather that reparation for last year’s!

It was a game certainly for the faithful as both Bombers and Blues fans were searching at times in vain for players with skill and inspiration. And whilst the game had its downside with some unbelievable and forgettable moments it also was a game where both sides threw their bodies, dare and dash in order to gain that winning edge. It was the Bombers at the end of the match that showed more of all ‘3’! But at least there was enough passion and commitment to keep on keeping on.

PS. Next week we need Hurley and Laycock in the team!

Round 3 - Bombers hit back!

The Bombers finally got a win in 2010 against the Blues, but it was not pretty and at times was more the case of which team could make less mistakes ... the Bombers continue to over-use the ball and make far too many skill errors. But at least they played at a higher intensity, and a few players started to show some form - namely Williams and Ryder. The Dons need to back up the effort against the Eagles in Perth, not an easy task even if the Eagles have not got a win yet. Hurley should be in the team, and perhaps Laycock too. Go Dons!

Round 2 - No fowards, no goals, no wins

Well, the Dons have been knocked over twice in 2010 for their inability to take their opportunities and kick goals. Put simply, there are no key forwards at the moment making any impact, and this has also meant the small fowards are finding it very tough ... Ryder and Hille are having no impact in the forward line, while Williams has not even scored yet. Big Gumby is showing some good signs but deserves a season just to stay fit and find his feet. This leaves the suspended Hurley and dropped Neagle to get into the side fast and do something. The Dons better find some run and dash against the Blues or 2010 may slip away quickly ...

Round 2 - Where's Neagle?

The game seemed to be in the balance as soon as the teams lined up. The forward lined looked to be under-manned and under-done and it never looked like the Bombers could kick a winning score despite their attack on the ball through most of the game. The skill level wnet into a spiral as the ball went into the forward line given the lack of targets and confidence in the forward line up. Despite the backline's superiority it diminished as the game wore on and the ball came out of their defense with ease and precision spliting the ground down the middle. The entries by the Bombers was via the flanks and at times seemed to be via the concourse! But the question remains why was Neagle not playing given he is the reason along with Gumbleton for giving up Lloyd to the media pack. There were many disgruntled even angry Bomber fans that left the Dome and hardly surprising given the lack of a game plan, lack of skill and lack at the end of the game an ability to close down a running side. Is this all there is for 2010? The Blues next weekend will give an indication of whether Knight's has a plan and the players have confidence in their own and the team's capacity to play finals football.

Round 1 - Cats too good, next Freo

Have the Bombers improved? Can they make the finals? It's hard to tell from the loss to the Cats. At times they were on fire, then they conceeded 9 goals in a row ... not good. Next is Freo. BIG GAME for the young Dons. Great news is that there is huge selection pressure. McVeigh and Myers must be a good chance to make the team. Go Dons!

And the word from Hird on the Bombers!

Round 1 - A new season...

It was all happening at the G on Friday night as Kes and I sat together to watch the opening game of the season. The Bombers were led out by 150 gamer David Hille along with some familiar and unfamiliar gaites! It seems that it was only yesterday that I could pick up all the players in a Bombers' line up. But tonight was to see what the pre-season had done for the Bombers and it looked good with a 23 point lead and the run and tackling caused the Cats some pain and little gain. But there was a feeling that as the game wore on the bigger bodies and tyhe likes of the on ballers would see the Cats coem home in the last quester and win. But the Bombers were not to be denied for most of the game and lost out only by some poor decision making and play in front of goals. And the Cats make you pay for such slip ups. Still it was a good showing but not good enough to worry the top teams unless those percentage shots and clearances start to come off. Freo this week should be a real test of the team.

Elimination Final - Oh yes it was!

It's never great finishing a season being thrashed. The Crows handed the young Bombers a 96 pts loss. Looking back at 2008, the Saints also belted the Bombers by 108 pts in the final game of the year that season. So, what's changed between 2008 and 2009? A lot. The Dons are on the way back! They made the finals, and they fought to make the finals. They unearthed some huge talent with Ryder in the ruck, Pears and Hurley. Just wait for Welsh, Prismall, Davey and Neagle to have full pre-seasons. And let's not forger the Bombers will hopefully bring in some very BIG "recruits" in Hille and Gumbleton, and even Laycock. So bring on 2010!

Elimination Final - Oh no!

2010 will be a year to build on what we have achieved this year and to have Lloyd, Hille, Laycock, Ryder and hopefully Gumbleton on the park. The challenge will be for the players who have made a contribution in 2009 to step up. Well done Bombers!

Round 22 - Standing up and being professional

Well it's been a big week for the Dons, but I think they handled themselves like a club with a long-term plan and some proffessionalism. What joke the Hawks are!?

Lloyd made the right decision to take 4 weeks for his bump. The bad luck for Lloyd is that he really made a "perfect" bump ... but he collected Sewell as he was over the ball, and that's not allowed, for good reason really. I hope Lloyd plays on and hands over the captaincy. Then he can just have a year focusing on playing good football, as Hird did in his last season.

The Dons are talking themselves up, but I can't see how they will beat the Crows in Adelaide without Paddy ... plus the Crows will give Hurley HUGE attention. It's really up to the midfield to make it a contest. We will see ... but the BIG positive is they made the finals, and won a "mini-final" against the Hawks. 2010 is the year of the Bombers!

Round 22 - We did it!

The first half was the Hawks....and the second put us in the final 8! The Hawks intimidated and played hard ball in the first half. No doubt there was talk at half time that suggested that the Bombers would need to take it up to the Hawks. We came out fighting and in a brilliant 3rd quarter we won the ball and the game. The knock to Sewell will no doubt dominate the media - Is the bump back? We could look like a very different team for the match against the Crows if the Tribunal also plays hard ball. So be it...go Bombers!

Round 21 - We reach our finale!

Well..............can we beat last year's Premiers and make the 2009 finals? Course we can and return to the G where we have played some big games over this season. The Hawks will be out to redeem their season no doubt. It will be a game that goes to the wire. Lloyd back and Ryder back...I would like to see that! Go Bombers.

Round 21 - It's finals time!

The Bombers will play finals this year no matter what! How? The loss to Freo means the Bombers will meet the Hawks in a "do-or-die" match at the home of football - the MCG. This is effectively an elimination final. The winner will probably get to play the Blues, the loser will take a holiday ...

This will be a fierce contest. Let's not forget ... the Hawks are the reigning premiers. The Bombers need Watson to regain fitness and Lloyd back in the team. If ever the Dons needed the captain to fire, it's now. A big game from Lloyd could be the difference.

The loss of Ryder has been a HUGE blow for the Bombers. They were oblitered in the ruck against Freo, and it all went wrong from there. But I think the Dons will be a different team at the MCG. They just need to play positive, attacking football. They can do it! They can win! Go Dons!

Round 20 - Brilliant Bombers!

Round 20 - Bombers earn gutsy win!

Well never say die...and the Bombers played out the last quarter with Ryder, Dempsey and Fletcher on the bench and Watson and Stanton on the ground but only just! It was a win to savour as in 2000 the Bombers streak was broken by the Bulldogs in almost similar circumstances. We can make the 8! We played three quarters in a run run game that had the Saints at times ragged and frustrated. Watson was a star. Having miss kicked across ground for a goal to the Saints in the second quarter, he took control in the centre bounce and repaid his mistake. He kept going till the end and showed both skill, stamina and leadership. But it was a stong team effort though Hurley should be singled out for a standout game. Go Bombers...we're back...but without Fletcher, Ryder and Dempsey! Ed Note: Photo shows the flooding tactic of the Saints.

Round 19 - Grounded....almost!

So the football experts got it mostly wrong this week...and the Bombers almost got it right. The question is where was this side over the past 2 weeks? Watson, Pears, Reimers, Dempsey and of course Fletcher and the enigmatic McPhee! And now to the Saints. Bellchambers is back from suspension and needs to be played. Lloyd, Lovett and Winderlich back would give us a real show...let's fly!

Round 19 - Bombers show some fight!

It could have been a great victory against the odds or a rather depressing loss to snuff out our finals chances. In the end, it was a draw. On paper, this is not a good result for the Dons at all. But in terms of form, it may be the spark the Dons need to play "their" brand of football for the final 3 games. To make the finals the Dons face the impossible task of beating the Saints, then a trip West to play Freo, and finally a showdown with the Hawks. Can they win all 3 games?

And then ... the Dons need Port and the Hawks to lose a few games ... But Knights is playing to win. He dropped a few this week, and brought in the likes of Quinn, Atkinson and Houli - all of them played good footy, and must have earnt a spot in next weeks team. Lovett and Welsh will hopefully come back into the team. And Knights suggested that Bellchambers might get a call up? Bring on the Saints!

Round 18 - Grounded?!

Last week some of the Bombers travelled west! And the result a lack lustre game by a team that was playing for the finals. Maybe they have run out of bodies and mental toughness. This week the Bombers play the Lions at the G and this will provide the answer...grounded of flying? Let us hope that they all come to play but given the loss of a number of key players this is a hard call.

Round 18 - No finals in 2009 ...

It's been a year of plenty of ups and a few downs, but now the Dons have run out of steam ... Losses to the Tigers and the Eagles mean the Bombers have fallen out of the top 8. However, the real problem is some key injuries and poor form. To play finals the Dons need to win 3 or even 4 matches. The more likely scenario right now is that they will lose the next 4 games, making it 7 consecutive losses to end the season ... let's hope this is not the case? C'mon Dons, fight for the top 8!

Round 17 - Bombers bomb out!

I knew that the Tigers would be no easy beats! The first quarter revealed that they had come to win and the Bombers were in need of some consistent and outstanding performances if we were to be in front come the final siren. Fletcher prevented the blow out that could have been and showed that attack on the ball was how the game needed to be played against a side that was playing for its future....and a coach to boot! Hesitancy and a lack of intensity at the ball placed the Tigers in a winning position up to the last 10 minutes. The loss was however always the most likely outcome throughout the game. It was a game that has defined our season; an inability to win against sides that dare to win! The West will decide our season's future......go Bombers!

Round 17 - Oh no, what a shocker!

When I woke up this morning to check the scores between the Tigers and the Dons I had a bad feeling ...

The Tigers showed what a difference a key forward makes!!! When Lloyd couldn't stand up because of his wounded heel, and Lucas was equally ineffectual without an excuse, besides his age, Riewoldt with 6 goals was the match winner.

Gee, did Knights get stuck into the team at the press conference after the loss! He attacked the team for not playing the Dons gameplan, and not respecting the Tigers. He was bitterly dissappointed.

Knights indicated that Lloyd is injured and will be out for at least a few weeks. From the sounds of it, Lucas may be dropped. He said Gumbleton will not play this year. But Daniher and Neagle may be thrown into the forward line.

The Dons now go to Perth in a must-win-match! If they can't beat the lowly Eagles, then they certainly don't deserve to play finals this year. The loss to the Tigers can wreck a season or galvanish a team - let's see how the Dons will respond?

Will the Bombers play finals?

If the Bombers can beat the Tigers, win twice in Perth and beat the Lions at the MCG, they should play finals. If they also beat the Hawks in the final round, they might even finish up the ladder to earn a home final ...

I actually think the Blues have a pretty tough draw! Port on the other hand has lots of home games and could win 4 or even 5 matches. The Hawks are gone, they won't beat the Saints or the Cats.

Round 16 - Bombers lose momentum and the second half!

The game was there to be won at half time by either side…but the umpires had other intentions. Now this is not to say that umpiring decisions should provide excuses but I have not been at a game where the 50 / 50 decisions went against one side in such a blatant and consistent manner. There were also decisions not made in favour of the Bombers that if paid would have at least provided some consistency to what was pathetic umpiring. If McLaren and Chamberlain are not disciplined for such umpiring display then the AFL will be culpable in its administration of the game. The Bombers standouts were Lovett, Prismall, Hocking (what a find), Fletcher and Stanton. Those that should not have the opportunity to be standouts next week are Lucas and Hooker. Lloyd has some questions to ask himself of his performance. We are a good side but have to withstand the pressure of the opposing team…and the umpiring decisions if we are to make the 8!

Round 16 - Key forwards?

The key stats were 20-9 free kicks to the Bulldogs, 8 of which came in the forward 50m, just 15 scoring shots from 47 times inside 50 for the Bombers, and 28 scoring shots for the Bulldogs from 60 entries. What does this mean?

a) The umpires didn't do the Bombers any favours.
b) The Dons don't have any key forwards who can take marks inside 50.

Once upon a time Lucas and Lloyd were dangerous, but not anymore ... Lucas will retire this year. Lloyd should play on, but just as Fletcher is now the 3rd defender, he should be the 3rd forward. For 2010, the hope is for Gumbleton and Neagle to get fit and take control of our forwardline, along with Hille, Laycock and Ryder rotating from ruck to forward.

For 2009, Knights will be relying on the small forwards and mid-fielders to kick the bulk of the goals. It may be time to throw Hurley or Daniher up forward.

Expect changes to the team for the next game. Read on about the Bendigo Bombers ...

"Skipworth was massive for us today, he had 35-plus touches and his leadership and ball use was superb. He was very unselfish," Thompson said.

"Lovett-Murray was fantastic and used his power and speed all day. His workrate was enormous and we were very happy with him.

"Bellchambers was also very good and rucked all day despite carrying a small injury. He was tireless against some good, big opponents. He marked well and was good in the ruck.

"Atkinson was surperb again all day off half-back and it was possbily his best game of the year. His dash, carry, spoiling and defensive work was great. It was a complete game.

"Another positive was Zaharakis who was back to his old zip. He showed the class and poise he is known for and is a quality young player."

Round 15 - 35 reasons to smile

Make no mistake, beating the Swans at the SCG was one of the best wins the Bombers have had under Knights as coach. The Swans were playing for their season and had not lost a game at the SCG all year. But the young Bombers have a midfield that is growing in stature every week - the likes of Watson, Stanton, Welsh, Prismall and Lovett are up and flying! The Bulldogs on the rebound will be a tough ask for the Dons, but they just might pull it off.

Round 15 - Up close at Windy Hill

The win in Sydney was perhaps a season maker and given us a real chance of playing at season's end...and the almost win (only 35 points!) at Windy Hill by the Bendigo Bombers revealed some of the back up players we have to call on...Daniher, Neagle, Bellchambers, Lovett-Murray and Jetta. It was great being back on the Hill where the last match I saw was the Douta Stars win a Premiership with Kes playing on a wing! There are many memories in the stands and ground at Windy Hill. As I listened to Hickmoth's rev up at three quarter time I glanced over to see Simon Madden...yes memories give the 2009 Bombers hope!

Round 14 - Beware: Under Construction

It was not how it was supposed to be but the Bombers are a side that is clearly under construction. The highs and the lows will hopefully give way to consecutive wins in the near future. With an eye on the 8 the focus should be on ensuring that players get real time on the ground and build their confidence, body strength and skill. The former and latter are coming; the body strength will take another couple of summers. Go Bombers...the Swans are a gimme!

Round 14 - Not quite there yet ...

Hird wrote in the paper this morning that if the Dons beat the Pies, they would be back, big time. And Hird would be right. The Dons are developing much faster than most expected under Knights and finals remains a distinct possibility. But the Dons aren't a top 4 side (yet) and the Pies ran away this evening with a 35 point win. The Dons started great, but did not capitalise on the scoreboard, then the Pies got hold of the match and never let go and that is what a top 4 side does week in, week out. The Dons travel to Sydney next match for a showdown with the Swans. The return of Watson and hopefully a fired-up McVeigh should bolster the Dons. C'mon, let's get an interstate win!

Round 13 - 83,000 see Bombers in flight!

Last night at the G is what one goes to see...yes the Bombers beat the Blues. But so emphatically and mercilessly was not the expected result. The Bombers kicked 13 goals to 2 in the second half such was their dominance and the flow of their game. The Blues were a rabble by the end of he game as players celebrated their next step into the finals. The Pies next week is another big challenge...bring it on! Welsh was a star along with Davey, Prismall, Lucas and Hocking...but they were all in the win along with Knights who has the judgement and the nerve to take on any team.

Round 13 - The Bombers are flying high!

Incredibly, after looking in trouble, when 14 points down deep in the second term, the Dons outscored the Blues 16.6 (102) to 2.7 (19) for the rest of the game. Amazing stuff! It was even more stunning, given Watson was clearly the best player before limping from the ground midway through the second term. And that really is the only bad news ... Watson will be on the sidelines for some weeks. But McVeigh should be back next week, maybe even McPhee too. Bring on the Pies! Go Knights - you are a super coach!

Round 12 - Bombers too good

The Bombers played the second half as they will need to play next week;s first! Fletcher was brilliant in the backline and any doubt that he will play on in 2010 was expelled at his capacity to have weeks out and come and take up the game where he left off. And players to show their mettle including Prismall, Lucas and Welsh show that we have the depth to make the 8. This week's clash against Carlton will show if we have the will!

Round 12 - Still in the finals race!

The Dons took on a determined Demons outfit, but turned up the pressure in the premiership quarter and ran out winners by 48 points! The good news for the Dons is that McVeigh, Welsh, Fletcher, Prismall and Skipworth all played solid football, and can only get better. The bad news is McVeigh got reported and suspended for the Blues game ... So it looks like Slattery with be straight back into the team, and maybe Lovett-Murray too. The Blues will be fired up! A win and the Dons are knocking on the door of the top 4 ... a loss and the Dons will be outside the top 8. It's a fine line between success and failure.

Round 11 - Freakish open and shut game

This was a freaksih game with both sides kicking goals from impossible angles and dong it all day! It was also feeaksih that the Crows actually won given they had been behind all day on thse scoreboard and even in general play. But the final quarter saw the Bombers archilles heel show up and it included low percentage hand passes and an inabilty to get anyone up forward who could take a mark. Neagle maybe the future but yesterday he was not going to win it for us. In fact Lloyd spent the last quarter out of position and looking for a touch when he should have been in the goal square. Ryder will need some real back up if we are to win games before the return of Bellchambers and the likes of McVeigh (still looking for form), Reimers, Prismall, Skipworth et al are match ready to win the required 6 more games to make the finals. Can we do it? Yes we can!!

Round 11 - Sad loss

I think this interview with Knights after the loss to the Crows sums it up pretty well ...

"We are a very, very disappointed football club tonight," he said.

"We were up during the game at different stages and we didn't have the ruthlessness to put Adelaide away, then when Adelaide got momentum back they hurt us and they were more ruthless.

"It is certainly a development area for our group that when we have got the upper hand, or the foot on the throat, we have got to be more clinical at taking the opportunities."

But Knights remains positive about the first half of the season, which has been largely based on the great efforts of younger players. He talked about the expectation that in the second half of the season he expects the more senior players to step up - the likes of McVeigh, Welsh, Lucas, Reimers, Fletcher and many others! Go Dons!

Round 10 - on the darkside!

Yes we played on the dark side against the Cats and seldom saw the light of day and the ball. In fact the Cats kept the ball mostly to themselves except when we bounced it off each other in a circular fashion and ultimately got nowhere! Such was the pressure and the body contact. They are a team much like we were! We battled hard throughout the match so there was no doubting the preparedness of all players to have a go...but it came undone so quickly that it became an attacking move for the Cats. In fact the Cats not only outplayed the Bombers but out umpired us too. Such is the nature of their game that they control all aspects. So now for the Crows ......no easy beats for sure! Go Bombers!

Round 10 - A long way to the top ...

Put simply, the Cats belted the young Bombers. A 10 goal loss is never too good. But in many ways this is a good loss for the Dons to not let them forget just how much hard work needs to be done to really be a contender - "it's a long way to the top".

But don't despair, this team has huge improvement left in it, and a host of players to come back into the team. Not to mention Prismall who played another game for Bendigo and had 30 possessions. Welsh is not far off either. And let's not forget Fletcher.

The real problem is that Hille, Bellchambers and Laycock are all out injured. That leaves Ryder to do all the ruck work ... It seems Knights has to think creatively and find another back-up ruckman, and fast.

It's a BIG month of football for the Dons, who play the Crows, the Demons, the Blues and the Pies. How the Dons go over the next month will largely determine if they make the finals or not. I think they can do it! Go Dons!

Round 9 - Two in a row…I’d like to see that!

In game to be lost the Bombers came out after half time and shut down the Tigers in the first 10 minutes or so and then took the Tigers to task with speed, skill and tenacity. By the end of the third quarter the Bombers had taken the lead and were never headed. The last quarter hopefully will be the way the Bombers start off next week's game against the Cats. Winderlich, Watson, Ryder, Lloyd were outstanding in a team of goers. Go Bombers!!

Round 9 - Fantastic Bombers!

When I switched on my computer to check the scores I was worried ... The Tigers had been playing some good footy, and the players "revolt" during the week to oust the coach would have tensions running high in the Tigers room. Anyone could tell you the Tigers were going to have a red hot go against the Dons!

The Tigers got off to the start they wanted and lead by a couple of goals after the first half. Would the Bombers make a stand? The anwser was an emphatic YES. The young Bombers kicked 12.7 to 3.5 in the second half to obliterate the Tigers.

The Bombers have given themselves every chance to play finals this year. It's getting exciting! And next week it's the Cats, who are no longer so far in front of the pack. The Dons have nothing to lose - just run, run, run! Go Bombers!

Round 8 - Eighty-Nine Point Turn Around!

Last time we played the Saints at the Dome we lost by 108 points an embarasment that has haunted Capatain Lloyd. This weeks 19 point loss was achieved on a the back of a disastrous first quarter but the Bombers did well enough to win the next 3 quarters. But losing is not much compensation for a side that is looking for a position in the 8. With Mark McVeigh, Kyle Reimers, Jason Laycock and Hayden Skipworth back from injury we need to beat the Tigers. But they will not be easy beats that's for sure!

Round 8 - Focus on the Tigers!

The Saints got the four points, but I think the Dons might have got more out of the game. They put themselves in a position to the beat Saints. And if we consider the Dons will only get better as this season goes on, and the huge list of players to come into the team, the signs are very bright for the young Bombers. On top of that, the players and coaches did not accept the "honourable" loss. They want better. They want to be up among the top teams.

This week the Dons take on the Tigers. If the Dons want to play finals football this year, they have to beat the teams below them, especially those at the very bottom of the ladder, like the Tigers. But this won't be an easy game. On contrary, the Tigers are playing much better than their 1-7 record suggests. They should have beaten Port in Adelaide, and I suspect they will relish the chance to knock off the Dons. This will be a contest!

The good news at Bomberland is that the Bendigo Bombers this week will feature four big-name inclusions - Mark McVeigh, Kyle Reimers, Jason Laycock and Hayden Skipworth. With Fletcher not too far away, and the likes of Prismall, Hurley, Jetta, Daniher and Lucas (slowing returning to form) already playing for senior spots, the pressure is on. Go Dons!!

Round 7 - Dare to win

I settled back in my seat in the Dome, plastic beer in hand and watched as the Bombers and Hawks did their regulatory drill before the start of the match. I had come to see the 'new' Bombers play...not to see a win but to see a team of players I could hardly recognise let alone remember their names. Kes had told me of the likes of Bellchambers, Pears, Myers, Zaharakis who had kicked 'that' goal, Hocking ( I thought he played for Geelong!), Houli, and of course Negale (son of Merv who I could recognise back in the old days). The players moved to position and as I had thought it looked to be boys against men...Franklin put Pears down before the match started with a chest bump and the backline looked flakey to say the least. The game started and the Hawks circled and dropped into goal almost with ease. The goal came and then the points and as the quarter got older the Bombers seemed to see themselves in the game and game that they could play some footy. It was quarter that had a glimmer of hope and not just because the Hawks were off target but that the new players and the likes of Lloyd, Watson , Stanton, and Monfries were hard at the ball and showed signs of dash and dare.
The second quarter came and went with the Hawks grinding and kicking their way into the ascendancy though only by a point. It did however suggest that the second half would go the way of the odds of 6 to 1.

The third quarter commenced with the Bombers now seemingly undeterred by the Hawks last quarter superiority and as the quarter progressed so did the odds and an unlikely win for the Bombers. This now had the feeling of game to win not just to share the ground with the reigning Premiers. The earlier arrogance and bulk of the Hawks dissipated and the Bombers' running and preparedness to take risks gave them the ascendancy. The third quarter was certainly a treat with 6 goals to 3 and the Bombers, with a Bellchamber's mark and goal, went into the three-quarter huddle with more than a chance but the money was now on them!

The last quarter was exhilerating. It was so because the Bombers were now playing pressure football and coming up with the goods despite the Hawks showing signs of getting on top. As the quarter rolled on the Bombers became arrogant..not only daring but deciding to win. In one of the last throws of the Hawk's dice Franklin did his normal tap and run strutt but was brought undone by a couple of Bomber players and the rest is history. We were drawing away and with skill, passion and discipline. It was the game of the year...so far.

Best for the Bombers were the team...yes there were outstanding efforts, runs, tackles, marks and goals. But they were in that game to win and they did it despite the pundits and maybe some supporters who like me who had come along for the match not the win!

Round 7 - A miracle win!

Everybody has under-estimated the young Bombers! Including me. Who seriously thought the Dons would not only beat, but thump, the Hawks. Knights and Lloyd are determined to lead this team back to the finals. And right now, finals look a realistic chance for the Bombers. Prismall, McVeigh and Welsh should all be in the team by mid-season. And every game these youngsters play will make them better. Hurley and Daniher must be a chance for a call up soon. The Saints will be the toughest test yet, but who knows? Go Bombers!

Round 6 - Inside fifty..... fifty more times!

...and we lost by 40 + points. Says something really! Good to see Watson and Lovett playing well and being consistent. Also Fletcher's 300th game was his normal serviceable and steady self until of course he went off injured. He has been a true champion for the Bombers. This week the Hawks are coming off a near win/loss. Keep the side as it is except for injuires and put it to the players to perform. Go Bombers!

Round 6 - Time to get back to the MCG or Dome

It's fair to say the Bombers are not much of a travelling team ... they Lions ran out to a very comfortable win by 43 pts. Just as Port thumped the Dons by 41 pts.

There were few winners and even fewer highlights for the Bombers. Apart from Watson, Lloyd battled on manfully, Lovett continued his good form, while Winderlich and Lovett-Murray contributed.

The decline of Lucas this year, on the other hand, has reached a crucial point ... Knights has a tough decision on his hands, just as he did with Johnson and Peverill.

The Dons are now 3 wins and 3 losses. Over the next two weeks they play the resurgent Hawks and the impressive Saints. The team will want to win one of those games to stay in touch with the finals race ...

Round 5 - Wow, that was a comback!

How did the young Bombers win that game??? They just kept going and going! The injury to Hille meant there was no choice but to throw Ryder into the ruck, and he responded with an ANZAC medal. With Hille out for the season (a HUGE loss) it appears Ryder will be our no. 1 ruckman. As Sheedy would say "one door closes, another one opens". It's up to Ryder now to lead the Bombers in the middle of the ground. Bellchambers and/or Hooker will most likely get a call to support Ryder in the ruck. Hooker was in the best again this week for Bendigo (as was Houli), so he might get his chance against the Lions. To win a game with no goals from Lucas and Lloyd is pretty amazing ... and you would think it's going to "click" soon for Lucas and I can see Lloyd kicking a bag of goals next week. Go Dons!!!!

Round 5 - Knight's win!

Yes we have a coach! Knight's played Collingwood today with a team that was not willing to say die! He is a coach who has instilled in the players that two players don't make a team and then add Hille! We won because we had faith, run and determination. We were also playing a side that thought they would win...were arrogant and believed that they could individually win the game. Think Eddie! Lucas tried hard but has not the capacity to have that second go at the ball...it's all or nothing now. And Lloyd was injured and must be frustrated that he cannot sink that 900th goal. Both need to take time out next week. It was a great game...a game that the Bombers deserved to win despite the winging of the Collingwood fans. One free does not make a game...get real. I think this sums up the loss to the Kangas ... "Of Essendon's 150 kicks, more than a third didn't find their target, with Watson (six), Lloyd (five), Stanton (five), Lucas (six), Daniher (four from five), Dyson (four from seven) among the worst offenders. The video review will be a horror movie."

Add to that the interchange mix up that cost Lloyd kicking 900 goals and this game goes down as a shocker for the team. But as they say in footy, there is always next week. And it does not come any bigger than ANZAC day. The Dons can bounce back!

Round 4 - What a difference a week makes!

I saved myself for the G next Saturday so did not sit through what was clearly not a good game for the Bombers and some of our players in particular! Skill levels maybe caused by pressure but it surely cannot excuse a shot 3om out on goal or a player running out of defence and kick to an opponent! We need to call that something else so over to the coaches to remedy! Need to move a few VFL players into the team for the Collingwood clash...and get back some form and maybe some good old fashioned response to a bad game and be 'dropped'.

Round 3 - Watch out! Here come the Bombers!

A win over the Blues is something to savour! Both Knights and Lloyd were delighted when the siren sounded to record a hard-fought win for the young Bombers. What makes it all so exciting is that this team has HUGE improvement left in it. And there are many players to come back into the team ....

McVeigh and McPhee must be certain inclusions for the next game, and Lonergan is also a chance.

Then we still have Welsh, Reimers, even Prismall to return from injury. All to slot into the midfield.

And don't forget the likes of Houli, Hurley and Gumbleton and even Quinn ... or Lovett-Murray and Atkinson.

Round 3 - Lloyd's last laugh!

Yes we did it! Whilst nothing will wipe out completely the 1999 Preliminary Final, the win last night certainly went some way to wiping out the pain of the last 10 years. And did so in a way that suggests that the Bombers will be a team to be reckoned within the next 10 years unlike the Blues who have taken a long time to come back. The way the Bomber youngens played along with Lloyd, Fletcher and Lucas we are in for more wins than losses in 2009 and have put a halt to Carlton's top billing. Daniher and Pears were given a job and despite calls for moves from the Bomber faithful, Knight's kept faith with players who are here for the long hall. It seems Knight's approach is to keep on keeping on and his match planning and execution signals a coach who has not only faith in the team he puts on the park but faith in himself. Not a bad recipe really!

Round 2 - Looking good!

Whilst one game does not make a season it certainly makes a difference. And with Winderlich showing the sort of form that should be his hallmark, Watson continuing his good form and Ryder taking on a forward role the rest of the team looked sharp, quick and determined. It was a good win and sets us up for a chance to knock off the Blues and maybe become their nemesis!

It just might be time for Lovett to shine!

Round 2 - Bombers still building!

The team-building continues at Bomberland! All week the media has been full of stories about the Dons list, Lloyd playing FF or CHF, and Knights and on and on. It was always going to be difficult to say goodbye to Hird and Sheedy. BUT the Dons have almost 40,000 members, strong finances, and a coach who has a long-term plan and a youthful list with talent!

The Dons knocked off Freo by 38 points with little input from Lucas, Lloyd and Hille. Winderlich stood up, Watson had another strong game, and Ryder is starting to "fly", and quite a few youngsters showed real signs of improvement. With the likes of McVeigh, Reimers and Lonergan soon back in the team, and Jetta, Lovett-Murray and Houli pushing for selection, along with the mid-season returns of Welsh and Prismall, things suddently look brighter at Essendon.

Let's see if the young Bombers can't topple the Blues!!

Call me simplistic but it was a deja vu game against Port...look bad...look OK...look good and then go down in the last 15 mins by 40 points! And despite the delight with Hurley, Skipworth and Watson the games by Lloyd and Lucas were dismal. What have they been doing over the pre-season!? We will have to do a lot better against Freo or the calls will be out for Knight's scalp and maybe Sheedy will end up coaching two sides!

Round 1 - Hurley arrives but Port sails away ...

The footy is back! Even a loss to Port can't dampen my spirits!

The big news all week for the Bombers was the back injury to Gumbleton. An injury that has dragged on for almost 2 years ... One has to wonder what the Essendon medical staff has been doing all summer, when the number two draft pick from 2006 gets to the week before the start of the season, and they decide its time for surgery.

But back to the game. The Dons were competitive, but in the end got belted by 41 points. Lucas, Lloyd and Neagle kicked 2 goals between them, so it's not surprising the Dons lost. The highlights were the great performances by Hurley and Skipworth. If they keep playing like that, the Dons will be very happy. Watson and Stanton were also both playing good footy. Let's hope McVeigh is fit for the next game.

The Bendigo Bombers got thrashed ... what's new? But Zaharakis, a recent draft pick along with Hurley, picked up 30 stats and kicked 7 goals. Yes, it was 7 goals. I think this kid might get a game in the seniors pretty soon.

ESSENDON FOOTBALL CLUB FIRST GREEN PRECINCTS PROJECT
The Federal Government is providing the Essendon Football Club with up to $1.5 million for water and energy efficiency upgrades to its facilities at Windy Hill in Melbourne. Minister for the Environment, Peter Garrett, said the funding honours an election commitment. “This is the first project under the $15million Green Precincts Fund that will support at least 10 demonstration sites around Australia,” Mr Garrett said. “The Fund is providing matching funding of $500,000 to $1.5 million to community organisations, sporting clubs, and state, territory and local governments for water and energy efficiency demonstration projects in high-profile sites. “Today we are inviting owners and managers of high-profile community facilities to submit project proposals for the Green Precincts Fund. Successful projects must be able to demonstrate and deliver significant water and energy savings.” Minister for Climate Change and Water, Senator Penny Wong, said the Green Precincts Fund forms part the Government’s $12.9 billion Water for the Futureplan to secure the long-term water supplies of all Australians. “Visitors to Green Precinct sites will be able to see the relevant technologies in action – using water more wisely and energy more efficiently. The aim is to inspire visitors to adopt these ideas at their own community facilities and in their own homes,” Senator Wong said. Minister for Finance and Deregulation, Lindsay Tanner, said the first stage of the Windy Hill project includes installing an innovative under-oval 800,000 litre water storage system for rain and stormwater. “Together with other new water saving initiatives and recycling of pool water, the club aims to halve its use of mains water,” Mr Tanner said. “The Windy Hill precinct will also generate renewable energy through solar orwind power, and install solar hot water services and building monitoring systems including smart metering. This will result in substantial reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

Round 21 & 22 - The Season End!

The final 2 games of season 2008 will not be wiped from our memory until we return to the winners list in 2009. The defeat will have left an indelible mark on many players and it is a question of how they will wash it off over the pre-season. Season 2009 needs to bring some real change to a side that showed form on too few occasions. When players were missing through injury or suspension, players did not step up to the mark and were missing even though on the field. This is either inexperience or indicates that they lack the skills and the bodies to take up the challenge. Time will tell whether we have the players to really mix it when the going gets tough and the coaching staff to help players realise their ambition to be a finals side. 2009 promises to be a watershed year for the Essendon Football Club. Bring on the membership tickets!

Round 22 - 108 reasons to train very hard over the pre-season

The Dons went into the game against the Saints with a "reserves" team - most of the players were young, inexperienced and not ready for senior footy. Even with the likes of Pev, JJ, Rama and Mal playing their last game, it just made little difference ... a sad way to go out of footy. The Dons simply fell apart and lost by 108 points! The lesson - train hard, very very hard over the pre-season!

Round 20 - Last man standing...

...turn out the lights on Season 2008. But we cannot complain. We have found some good new players and some stalwarts have stood up to be in Season 2009. The younger players seem destined to get injured but I sometimes think that winners are not only grinners but also do not get the injuries. Maybe it is just the chicken and the egg! The last 2 games will be a chance to give a stalwart (Johnson) and some new comers a chance to take the big stage. It will be better than playing in the VFL and getting hammered form pillar to post...how demoralising must that be.

Round 20 - Appalling injurt list ...

The Dons limped into the game against the Crows, then lost Fletcher, Hille and Dempsey ... all injured, most out for the rest of the year. It's a sad end to an up and down season. Knights will simply have to play who is left standing? But hopefully Jason Johnson gets a game to say goodbye. I reckon the team might lift for that game!

Round 19 - Finals Dream Over (for this year)

The Dons went into the match against the Eagles needing a win to keep their faint finals hopes alive. But Peverill and Atkinson were both replaced in the selected team due to injury and Lucas was not fit to play ... The Dons first half was a shocker! They fought back in the second half, but the damage was done and the Eagles ran out winners by 10 points. Very dissappointing!

Knights indicated the Dons finals run this year is over. But next year the goal is finals - no ifs, no buts. Over the next 3 weeks, the Dons play the Crows, the Bulldogs and the Saints (all of which are likely to play finals this year). Places on the Dons list for next year are up for grabs, a few youngsters will be expected to show something, and hopefully Johnson can play a last match in the red and black.
